Introduce yourself

My name is Bertie, and my pronouns are they/them.

How long have you been a student at Sky Sirens? What do you do here?

I've been a student here for about 8 months now, and have been doing Lyra for the past few terms and loving it!

What do you identify as within the LGBTQIA+ community?

I identify as a non-binary bisexual. I realised that I was bisexual relatively young, but my gender identity has been harder for me. I have spent many years floundering between identities.

I find that, at least at the moment, non-binary is broad enough that I don’t feel claustrophobic in my gender, but also gives me the validation of a specific label I can identify with.

As an AFAB person, I often struggle with embracing my feminine side while not feeling like I am just accepting the gender norms assigned to me. I have found dance, especially at Sky Sirens, to be a place where I can feel sexy and femme while not actually feeling gendered.

Dance isn’t sexy because I look feminine or girly, it’s because I can make beautiful shapes with my body.
